As someone who is profoundly deaf and relies on lipreading to understand and communicate with hearing people, I was initially nervous about learning to drive. What if I couldn’t understand the driving instructor?!?
When I first met Lin, I knew straightaway she was someone who would do her best to make sure I understood her. She swapped her face mask for a face shield so I would still be able to lipread her. She brought along a white board which she used to write notes on. She also came up with hand gestures so I knew when to turn left, right, pull over etc. She was also very patient, even when I asked her to repeat herself for the 300th time! She even briefed the examiner on what they needed to do so I could communicate and understand them clearly during the test. Learning to drive with Lin was great – her ‘can do’, positive attitude really made everything easier.
