With over 100 Local Authorities signed up to the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency directive, all prospective taxi or private hire drivers who require a Local Authority Passenger Carriage licence will have to take a Taxi Driving Test at a DVSA test center.
All applicants to the industry must be over 21, and must first apply to the local Taxi Licensing Office and undergo certain checks:
- An investigation by the Criminal Records Bureau
- An investigation by the local authority for proof of residency
- An in depth medical examination by a nominated GP
The Taxi Driving Test is similar to the practical driving test taken by learner drivers, except that there will be a higher standard required with a maximum of only 9 driving faults acceptable for a pass.
