Now that I’ve been in business for a few years, I can honestly say I finally have an appreciation of just how many supporting players are involved in making me and mine a success. I certainly can’t do it all myself: I don’t have the expertise or enough hours in the day….. but that’s ok!
Whether your company is just starting out or has been around for a while, here are some of the superheroes you might need to have on board:
An Accountant: Whether you’re your own bookkeeper or you outsource to an accountant, you need someone to keep your numbers in check. Yes, you should understand your own financials, but even if you’re accounts-savvy, it’s worth consulting someone who has an unbiased perspective on how your business is doing and the knowledge to let you know what can help it grow. Clarity is king!
An IT Star: Sure, some are born techies! If that doesn’t describe you, and it certainly doesn’t describe me, then one of the most frustrating parts of being your own boss is also being your own ‘IT magician.’ You can learn to do lots of tech chores on your own—but is that the best use of your time? You need someone who can keep your systems running smoothly, advise you on the best ways to update and upgrade, and just plain take care of problems faster than you can. My life saver!
A Marketing Maestro: Marketing is one of the most important facets of small business ownership. It can make or break your business. Yet, especially with the rise of social media, so many of us feel we can do it all ourselves. Some of us can—but if you can’t, you’d be smart to seek out a consultant who can put you on the right path, show you a way through the fog and maybe even take some tasks off your hands. A superstar!
This is the real magic for me though!…… A Listening Ear: Whether it’s family, a trusted friend, a colleague or even someone you connect with online, we all need someone to lean on when the challenges of building a business threaten to get us down. It’s great to have someone around who will listen……. shares their expertise, allows you time to work things out in order to create your master plan for the future! My most respected wizard!
